35.5. Bibliographical notes
quickinfo

There is much more to say about the distribution of PPs in verbal, nominal, and adjectival constructions: it is covered in the various chapters on complementation of the respective categories in Sections V2, N15.2, and A24.1. The distribution of PP-complements has given rise to much controversy, and the literature on the subject is extensive; cf. Section V2.3 for a detailed discussion. The complementive use of adpositional positional phrases received a great deal of attention during the rise of Stowell’s (1981) small-clause theory: important studies on Dutch are Hoekstra (1984a), Hoekstra et al. (1987), Mulder & Wehrmann (1989), Hoekstra & Mulder (1990), and Teun Hoekstraʼs paper Small clauses everywhere, which was published posthumously in Hoekstra (2004). A more detailed discussion of the postnominal attributive PP-modifiers can be found in Section N16.3.1, and of the distribution of adverbial PPs in Chapter V8.
