15.0. Introduction
quickinfo

This chapter discusses complementation of nouns. Section 15.1 deals with a number of general observations that will play a crucial role in the more detailed discussion of complementation in the remainder of this chapter. Section 15.2 discusses in more detail non-clausal complements, i.e. PP and NP-complements; this includes NP-complements that occur in determiner position as a genitive noun phrase or possessive pronoun. Section 15.3 concludes the chapter with a discussion of clausal complements. Of course, any discussion based on a distinction between complements and modifiers must provide the means of distinguishing between the two groups. Section 15.2.1 therefore describes a number of syntactic tests for distinguishing between PP-complements and PP-modifiers within the noun phrase. Section 15.3.3 focuses on the difference between clausal complements and clausal modifiers (i.e. relative clauses) within the NP.
