The discussion of R-pronominalization and R-extraction in this chapter is mainly based on the seminal PhD theses of Van Riemsdijk (1978), Bennis (1986), as well as a lesser-known paper (in Dutch) on the distribution of er by Huybregts (1991). Other important works with relevant discussions are Bech (1952), Coppen (1991), Geerts (1984), Beeken (1993), Odijk (1993), Zwart (1993), Barbiers (1995a), Zwarts (1997a), Haeseryn et al. (1997), and Visser (2002). Quantitative and expletive er are discussed in more detail in Sections N19.3 and N21.1.2. The data on the co-occurrence and conflation of the various types of R-words in Section 36.5 (the appendix) are complex, and it is sometimes difficult for native speakers to supply their judgments on the examples discussed; not surprisingly, conflicting judgments can be found in the literature, and that it is virtually impossible to provide an exhaustive review of this topic. For this reason, it is recommended that readers interested in exploring these issues in more detail also consult the usual references, like (1952), Van Riemsdijk (1978), Bennis (1980/1986), Huybregts (1991), and Odijk (1993:§6/1994).
