The general outline of the clause in terms of the three topological fields given in this chapter is fairly uncontroversial; cf. Haeseryn et al. (1997: §21) for a similar discussion in more traditional terms, as well as references to the literature in Dutch. The syntactic analysis of the different fields given here is based on the general format of clauses assumed in generative grammar; cf. also Zwart (2011: §4, 9 & 10) for a very good introduction and historical background. Further references to the literature on verbs in second and clause-final position and the different subparts of the clause they distinguish (i.e. the clause-initial position, the middle field and the postverbal field) can be found in Chapter 10 to Chapter 13.
