25.1. Modification of scalar adjectives
quickinfo

Set-denoting adjectives often come in antonym pairs that are placed on a single implied scale; cf. Section 23.3.2.2, sub I. Example (2) illustrates this for the antonymous adjectives slechtevil/bad and goedgood. For our present purposes, it is important to note that the two adjectives each indicate a range on the scale, i.e. that they are both scalar. Note that goed can also be used as an absolute adjective with the meaning “correct”, as the opposite of foutwrong; cf. example (276) in Section 25.2, sub II.

Section 25.1.1 first considers the semantic relevance of scales. Section 25.1.2 shows that degree modifiers can be used to refer to a specific point or interval of the range denoted by the adjectives. Section 25.1.3 considers (discontinuous) complex degree phrases headed by zoso, tetoo, voldoendesufficiently and genoegenough. Section 25.1.4 concludes with a discussion of the modification of measure phrases like langlong and kortshort.
