quickinfo

Chapter 2 provided a classification of verbs based on the verb frames in which they occur, i.e. based on the number and types of complements they take. This chapter discusses so-called verb-frame alternation, which refers to the fact that some verbs can occur in more than one verb frame. Section 3.1 begins with a brief characterization of the main types of alternation, which will be discussed in more detail in Sections 3.2 and 3.3. Section 3.4 concludes with a discussion of some cases which have been described as involving verb-frame alternation but which do not seem to fit the definition of the term given above.
