The introduction to this chapter assumed that cardinal numerals are lexical (and not functional) heads; this raises the question as to their syntactic category, which will be discussed in Section 19.1.1.1. Section 19.1.1.2 continues with a discussion of the form of cardinals, and will show that the rules for forming compound cardinals are complex and allow for a fair amount of variation. Section 19.1.1.3 focuses on the semantics of cardinals. Section 19.1.1.4 discusses the distribution of cardinals within the noun phrase. Finally, Section 19.1.1.5 discusses the modification of cardinals.
