10.4.Bibliographical notes
quickinfo

The theoretical background of the placement of verbs in main and embedded clauses has been discussed in Section 10.1, sub III. Classical key studies that have led to the current view on this topic are Paardekooper (1961), Koster (1975), Den Besten (1983) and Zwart (1993/1997). A good starting point for further study of this topic is the historical review in Zwart (2008/2011: §9-11). The generative study of the behavior of verbal (X+V) collocations with respect to verb-second/first is relatively new; cf. the seminal studies in Koopman (1995), Den Dikken (2003), and Vikner (2005). The data discussed in Section 10.2 are based on these studies as well on Google searches (with sometimes unclear results). Section 10.3 discusses a number of clause types with special behavior with respect to verb-first/second; the most important references are given in the respective subsections.
