10.3. Verb-first/second: special cases
quickinfo

This section discusses a number of special cases concerning the placement of finite verbs, which have in common that they pose (sometimes putative) problems for the view that verb-second is an obligatory and exclusive property of Dutch main clauses. In Section 10.3.1 we discuss a class of main clauses in which verb-second does not apply, and in Section 10.3.2 a number of (presumed) embedded adverbial clauses with verb-second. We will not discuss here the use of clauses introduced by the complementizer datthat or ofif as independent utterances such as the cases in (108); these are discussed in Section 5.1.7.
