The classification of pronouns proposed in Table 6 and developed further in Sections 19.2.1 and 19.2.3 is based on a strict separation of the formal and syntactic criteria which are familiar from the more traditional literature but which are applied here in a more systematic way; this results in a classification free of the various idiosyncrasies that have plagued generations of pupils and students in their first encounters with grammar; cf. Broekhuis (2002).
