This section has discussed the various subtypes of personal pronouns, i.e. pronouns that can be used as independent arguments but not as modifiers of a noun phrase. What we have not discussed is that some (but not all) of these personal pronouns are referentially dependent on some syntactically expressed antecedent in their clause or sentence; this is especially true for reflexive and reciprocal personal pronouns, and sometimes also for referential personal pronouns. Since the same is true for their possessive counterparts, we will not discuss this topic here; Chapter 23 will be devoted to it.
