15.3.Nominalization
quickinfo

Like verbs and adjectives, nouns are an open syntactic class. This means that the class of nouns can be expanded by word formation processes of varying degrees of productivity. This section lists the most important derivational processes in the formation of nouns; compounding will be discussed in Section 15.4. The discussion is organized according to the category of the input word of the derivation: verb (15.3.1), adjective (15.3.2) and noun (15.3.3). The discussion is intended to pave the way for the discussion of complementation of nouns in Chapter 16, and will therefore focus especially on derived nouns that inherit the denotation and argument structure (i.e. thematic roles) of their stem. This means that we do not intend to provide an exhaustive discussion of nominalization: references to more detailed overviews of noun formation in Dutch are given Section 15.5.
