Introduction
quickinfo

This chapter discusses the distribution of noun phrases in the clause and the concomitant differences between the various types of noun phrases: pronouns, for example, have a different distribution than definite noun phrases, which in turn behave differently than indefinite noun phrases. Sections 22.1 and 22.2 discuss the distribution of noun phrases in their core functions as arguments and predicates, respectively, while Section 22.3 contains some remarks on the adverbial use of noun phrases. This chapter is relatively short, given that some of the issues discussed here are treated in more detail elsewhere; for example, the use of noun phrases as arguments of nouns is discussed in detail in Chapter 16, and their use as arguments of verbs, adjectives, and adpositions in Chapters V2, A25, and P34.
